Wild Horse Island: Part Two

It's been 3 weekends ago now that Ryan and Jeannie brought over their family and we spent some time together on the lake. The Dad's went fishing for 2 days and then us Mom's and kids joined them on Saturday afternoon and we headed out on a boat ride on the lake. It was a beautiful day. We stopped at Wild Horse Island to have a look around. Here are more pictures from our stop on the island...

It started with a little walk on the shore. Then Randy and the kids started off through the woods. Of course I followed with the camera...

Pretty soon they all headed up the hill side. We hadn't planned a hike for the day but... the beautiful day and the promising view from the top just beckoned us on...

and the kids would not stop. They just kept running on up. Here they are looking back at slow Mom and Dad...

But we were enjoying the view, I tell ya...

Going on...

Wild Horse Island is the largest island in Flathead Lake. For centuries, the Salish-Kootenai used the 2,100 acre island to pasture horses to keep them from being stolen by other tribes. *

The sky was beautiful and the grass was SO green. We just couldn't get enough of this beautiful Island in the middle of the lake...

Another beautiful view with an old barn in it...

Colter and the girls split up near the top to explore different area's. Randy and Colter ended up at the top (see them between the trees). Here are Kyla and Maya running to find a way up...

At the tip top. See the rock pile to the left of Randy?

Protected as a state park since 1978, the island near Big Arm Bay is home to abundant wildlife including bighorn sheep, mule deer, waterfowl, bald eagles, and at least three wild horses. Access is by boat only.*

Like I said, we were not planning a hike and the girls were not exactly wearing their hiking shoes. But that didn't matter...

Finally we're all at the top. I wish I could share the 360 degree view with you...

The kids each added a rock to the rock pile on top...

Finally we headed back down...

Created by glaciers, almost thirty miles long and fifteen miles across at it's widest point, Flathead Lake is the largest natural, fresh water lake in western U.S. A 160 mile shoreline and water covers nearly two-hundred square miles of Montana and has a maximum depth of over 370 feet.*

It was an awesome, unexpected Island adventure for us that would have only been unbelievable had we been able to view a wild horse. But, no such luck this time...

I think we'll be going back someday. Wild Horses couldn't keep us away!

Thanks for joining us,

We drove south along the western side of that lake three years ago. We stopped for a picnic at a park along the way. You're lucky to live nearby!

Dear Mountain Top,
What a great way to spend time with your fam. We all need those little moments, the ones that make lifelong memories. I remember hiking expeditions with my family as a child in Nevada.
