Memory Lane Monday: Little Stick Man

I posted a 9 month old picture of Kyla a few weeks ago so I thought it would be fun to post a picture that I took of Colter when he was 9 months old.

What is it about sticks that boys find so captivating? And why does it start at such a young age? And when does this fascination ever end?

This little boy is 7 now and played with sticks whenever he had a chance this last 4 days... building forts, making traps, and using them for whatever need arose. In fact, there was no end to the boys that found hours of fun playing in the trees behind the candy stripe barn. How I wish I had a picture of them all...

Memory Lane Monday: Berta and Lon

Married February 22, 1914
(the distortion in this picture is the result of the curved glass frame this picture was displayed in)

"So this Lonnie B. was fast winning our hearts. He proved a very fine, respectable fellow in every way... He'd come to see us every evening, but never stayed to late, as he had to drive back home, a ten-mile trip by team and buggy. Sometimes he'd come horseback."
~Berta B.

Some family facts as told by Berta B. in Berta and Lon's Story:

-Clarence Elonzo (Lon) was born on January 23, 1889 in Pullman, Washington.
-Lon's father's ancestors were from England. His father's family lived in Indiana before moving to Oregon where his father drove a stage coach as a young man.
-After marriage, Lon's father moved to Pullman and ran a blacksmiths shop.
-After living in Pullman, the family moved to Kendrick, Idaho where the family ran a livery stable and then to Boulder Creek, Idaho where they farmed.
-In 1909, the family moved to Devon, Montana to homestead.
-The family shipped up their cattle, horses, machinery, and household things by freight cars called immigrant cars. Lon and his brothers rode the cars to care for the stock. They nearly froze crossing the mountains.
-Their home consisted of four small rooms with a coal shed built on and Lon's mother never owned a sewing machine, washer or icebox as long as she lived in Montana.
-Lon's mother was a spic and span housekeeper, did all her sewing, and made the best mincemeat pie.

-Berta Alice was born on February 4, 1895 in Duncan's Bridge, Missouri.
-Berta weighed 4 pounds at birth and her mother's wedding ring could be slipped over her hand.
-Berta's parents were both born in Missouri and were of Dutch, Scotch, and Irish decent.
-Berta's family moved from Missouri to Winoma, Washington in 1900 where her father got a job as a foreman on a cattle ranch. After that they moved into a small four room house in Rock Creek. They rode 3 miles to school on horseback.
-When Berta was 15, the family moved to Endicott, Washington were her father took up carpentry. Her grandparents (her mother's parents) lived nearby in St. John, Washington.
-The families next move was to Galata, Montana were they took up a homestead and did carpentry.
-Berta would never forget the day she came to Galata by train to join her family. It was raining and when she stepped off the platform at the depot into the gumbo mud, she lost first one and then the other of her new patent leather pumps! She landed in her stocking feet right in the mud.
-Berta left home and went to Chinook to attend highschool and prepare for becoming a teacher.

-In 1913, Lon and Berta met at a social event in Galata for the first time.
-They were married on February 22nd, 1914 in the Galata hotel building.
-Her wedding ring cost $5 dollars and was purchased from Sears and Roebuck.
-He carried her over the doorstep of their first home near Devon, Montana, a 12 foot by 16 foot homestead shack.

These interesting early day historical facts are about Randy's great-grandparent's (his mother's father's parent's). They would go on to live in a larger home with 10 children and many grandchildren and generations to follow.

Memory Lane Monday: The Streets of Dresden

Even though I take most of the pictures now-a-days, my husband is the real photographer in our home. He's been at is since high-school when he took journalism and dove head first into learning about photography.

These pictures were a gift he gave to me back in the fall of 1999. No, they were not framed and wrapped up with pretty paper. Instead they were quickly developed at the Walmart Photocenter and I devoured each one as we sat together on the couch in our rented house in town. Then they were safely slid into photo albums that sit in our living-room bookshelves. Now these are memories that are still a gift today.

These pictures were taken in Dresden, "East" Germany when Randy went there for two weeks of work back in the fall of '99. He ended up having quite a bit of time for site-seeing and a good tour guide. He took lots of wonderful pictures, but today I'll just share some of the street ones that I love...

He said many of the windows looked like this...

He saw many buildings like this. They were still being rebuilt from the bomb destruction of World War II...

A narrow brick street and lovely colorful buildings...

The ancient architecture...

This has to be one of my ALL TIME favorites! He said many of the brick streets wound around up the hills and out of sight. The colors are stunning...

Horse and buggy for hire...

Just another fabulous street scape!
Over the last 3 years of blogging, a lot of my favorite posts have been when I posted pictures/stories from the past. Whether 1 year old or 1 hundred years old, these pictures and stories have been like taking a pleasant stroll down Memory Lane. Some of you have enjoyed walking along with me and I have walking along with many of you too!

I would like to make this my new weekly challenge. Every Monday, I will try to post a new "Memory Lane Monday" post. When I was looking for a "Lane" picture to use for my button (below) I came across these pictures of Dresden and knew I had found the perfect material for my first post. You can grab my button below and join along if you wish.

41 of 52: Flashback -January 1997

Grandma Alice and Grandpa John~52 Wedding Anniversary
January 21, 1997

I wanted to post this picture last week but didn't get it done so thought I would do it today. It was a special year in my life when I got to live next door to my special grandparents! I will always remember them and all they meant to me. I miss them so much and often wish I could load up my family and head over to their house on these cold winter evenings to sit around their table or around the hot fire and visit.

Family Photo Flashback-December 2005

This was an impromptu family picture we took 4 years ago when we were spending Christmas in Jackson Hole with Keith and Melinda.

We have been trying for several weeks now to get it together to take family portraits. Yesterday was finally supposed to be the day. We had the place, the clothes, the moment all picked out. Then we woke up to rain. So we still don't have our family picture but we're gonna keep trying. If we try and don't succeed, we'll end up getting our pictures with a prof. photographer on the 9th.

Yeah, we could just back up to a wall and take another impromptu picture but... there comes a time in every mother's life when SHE JUST WANTS AN UP-TO-DATE, GOOD, EVERYONE SMILING AND LOOKING AT THE CAMERA, NO FINGER SUCKING OR NOSE PICKING, STAGED PICTURE.

It this to much to ask for?...

Good, I didn't think so...

Just a mother moment by,

Once Upon A Time...

He was a South Dakota farm boy.
She grew up in the mountains of Montana.

He walked to a one room school house and remembers bathing in a big basin by the warm kitchen stove.
She loved visiting her grandparents just down the street and remembers eating oatmeal for breakfast every morning.

He enjoyed sports and being outdoors.
She enjoyed singing and sewing.

He bought a new 'candy apple red' Volkswagen Beetle in 1968.
She bought a new Chevy Impala when she saved enough money from working out on her own.
Those were the only new vehicles they ever bought.

He came to Montana for college and became a Forester.
She moved to Washington and worked at a hospital.

And one day, between here and there in a little place called Post Falls, Idaho, they met for the first time...

He fell in love.
She fell in love.

Some time later...

He asked her to marry him.
She said yes.

Dad and Mom - Congratulations on 34 years!

Love you both,

Flashback: September 2008

Of all the pictures I have taken, this is one of my favorites. Maybe it's because it has my three favorite subjects in it, doing what they love to do- just being kids. Maybe it's because it was taken during my favorite time to take pictures- in the setting sun. Maybe it is because it was taken in one of my favorite places to take pictures- in our back yard.

Or maybe it's because a year has gone by and I see so much in this picture... What we've been through in the last year, the good, the bad, the laughter, the tears. The uncertainty and the unpredictable. But more than that, the stability of God, family, friendship, and new lessons learned in life.

In this picture I see how much my kids have grown. But maybe I've grown too. I hope so.

With warm wishes for the upcoming week,

Anything in any way beautiful derives its beauty from itself and asks nothing beyond itself.
Praise is no part of it, for nothing is made worse or better by praise.

For every truth there is an ear somewhere to hear it.
For every love there is a heart somewhere to receive it.

10 of 52: Flashback May 1997

It was 12 years ago that we became engaged. So I thought I would post this picture (taken from our wedding scrapbook)for this weeks challenge.* I laugh now as I look at this silhouette picture of us. When someone suggested we display it on our guest book table at our wedding, I turned a little pink, thinking of people seeing us being "kissy" and all. I believe I turned several shades of red when we actually kissed in front of all those people at our wedding! Now after 12 years of being "kissy" with my husband and 3 kids, it doesn't bother me much anymore.
Anyway...

Here is the story of our engagement in order to record it for memory failure in our later years...

We met at Bible Study in November of 1995 after he moved to this area, accepting his first job after college. I was going to the local community college at the time. We began dating a couple months later. After one and a half years of dating, talking on the phone every day and seeing each other nearly every day, I began to wonder if he was ever going to ask me to marry him. We talked about getting married a few times but that's about as far as it would go. When people asked me where I was headed after I finished school at the community college, I would say "I'll probably go on to school in Idaho (my parents were living there at he time) or to the U of M and get my degree in accounting." Despite all my childhood ambitions to become a teacher, a pilot, a horse trainer, and on and on, there is one ambition that weighed out all of the rest. It was the ambition to be a wife and a mother. And I knew this was the man I wanted to be a wife too.

As the weeks sped by and the day of my graduation loomed closer, I realized that I really needed to make my plans for the next year. I began looking at colleges and half heartedly packing up my stuff from the place were I lived, in order to move in with my parents for the summer. The weeks of year-end-projects and finals and the spring busyness kept me going and it was with much delight that I looked forward to spending a quiet evening with my boyfriend at one of our favorite restaurants on Friday night. It was a little chinese place and we quietly talked about our week but avoided any discussions of future days.

All too soon, the waiter brought our fortune cookies on a little tray. We each took our cookie, broke it open and exchanged our slips of paper so the other could read it. It was a little ritual we had adopted whenever we ate at a place that handed out fortune cookies. I took the slip of paper he handed me and opened it up and read it. It said "Will you marry me?" I looked up at him in alarm as if to say, "do you know that this says?!"... and he was smiling. I said "are you serious?"... and he nodded his head. So I said "yes...of course!..."

I have no idea what the other fortune cookie said. Maybe something like, "take time for the things that really matter most", or "you will see many of those you love in a few months", or "your plans are about to change for the better". They did change for the better. I did move to my parents for the summer and spent my days getting ready for our wedding that was scheduled for the end of August. I never did go on to more college, but I can still say "it was for the better." Good fortune was smiling down on us that day.
