Memory Lane Monday: Dresden, Germany-Oct. 1999

Back in April, I started out these Memory Lane Monday posts with a post about the streets of Dresden. These pictures were all taken by Randy when he was on a trip to Dresden in October of 1999 for work. I really enjoyed seeing all the sights that he saw through his pictures and now it's fun to go back and look at them again...

The following three pictures are taken of the Köenigstein – Saxony's Impenetrable Fortress overlooking the Elbe River below.

The Schloss Moritzburg Castle (below) was built from 1542–1546 as a hunting lodge.

The Semperoper Opera House was first built in 1841.

Beautiful architecture inside and old church.

The Zwinger Palace was constructed in stages from 1710 to 1728.

Many of the buildings above were damaged during the bombing of World War II and had to be restored over the following years.

Below is a newer building. If you watched the video in the last post (From Sand to Chip) you may recognize it. It is the AMD Fab in Dresden. Randy took this picture as he was flying out.

So, currently Randy is on another business trip. He is in the 45 largest state. 159 miles from N. to S. and 89 miles at it's greatest width. Population is over 621,760. He had a maple turkey sandwich for lunch and he went to bed about 2 hours ago. Any guesses where he is? (sorry, no prizes this time ;)

Memory Lane Monday: The Streets of Dresden

Even though I take most of the pictures now-a-days, my husband is the real photographer in our home. He's been at is since high-school when he took journalism and dove head first into learning about photography.

These pictures were a gift he gave to me back in the fall of 1999. No, they were not framed and wrapped up with pretty paper. Instead they were quickly developed at the Walmart Photocenter and I devoured each one as we sat together on the couch in our rented house in town. Then they were safely slid into photo albums that sit in our living-room bookshelves. Now these are memories that are still a gift today.

These pictures were taken in Dresden, "East" Germany when Randy went there for two weeks of work back in the fall of '99. He ended up having quite a bit of time for site-seeing and a good tour guide. He took lots of wonderful pictures, but today I'll just share some of the street ones that I love...

He saw many buildings like this. They were still being rebuilt from the bomb destruction of World War II...

This has to be one of my ALL TIME favorites! He said many of the brick streets wound around up the hills and out of sight. The colors are stunning...

Over the last 3 years of blogging, a lot of my favorite posts have been when I posted pictures/stories from the past. Whether 1 year old or 1 hundred years old, these pictures and stories have been like taking a pleasant stroll down Memory Lane. Some of you have enjoyed walking along with me and I have walking along with many of you too!

Supper From San Fransisco

One evening, Randy spent some time at the Fishermans Wharf. Here are some pictures...

At the Boudin Sourdough Bread Store and Bakery...

Sourdough, or fermented dough which is leavened with wild yeast, is generally traced back to biblical times. But our San Francisco French bread was created back in 1849, when the Boudin family first blended their traditional French baking techniques with the tangy "sour" dough used by the Gold Rush '49er's. The bread, with its dark-golden crunchy crust, soft chewy center, and distinctive flavor, soon became a local favorite, and before long, people lined up outside the bakery each morning for Boudin's oven-fresh bread. Ever since those Gold Rush days, we continued the tradition of baking San Fransisco Sourdough according to the Boudin family's time-honored methods. Surviving only in our fog-cooled climate, our mother dough imparts a flavor and texture unlike any other bread in the world. Today, we bake a slice of history into every loaf of our Sourdough, starting each day's bread with a portion of the origional Gold Rush mother dough, whick has been divided and replenished with flour and water each day for over 150 years.

They make Clam Chowder too!

And he brought some of it home to share with us!

San Franscisco Street Scenes

Last week Randy went to San Francisco for Semicon West. Here are some pictures he took from car, bus, and jet...

Randy told us that one day their Taxi got rear-ended by another car. Out jumped the taxi driver and out jumped the other driver to survey the damage. Taxi?-no damage. Other car?-smashed front bumper! And the other driver was so upset that his car was the one with the damage!

Huh?!?
