So, here I am* (Kyla's the photographer) cutting the papaya. I cut the ends off first and then cut it right down the middle...
Then I scraped out the seeds from each half... (very interesting seeds)
Then I peeled off the skin with just an ordinary peeler...
Then I cut the half in 4 long spears...
Then I cut the other way to make bite size cubes...
Here are the taste testers having a bite...
And here are the chickens finishing it off...
Sometimes I am very thankful to have chickens...
Okay, here's the rest of the story. The papaya turned out to be mushy and very bland tasting. Actually it was just plain bad tasting. I wonder if I let it ripen too much or if that is just the way they are supposed to be? Does anyone know?
Anyway, it's times like these that I'm glad we have a flock of chickens! Then I don't feel like I totally wasted my $3 dollar Papaya! Or the spinach that went to seed... or the bread that molded... And the compost pile helps with that too.
So even though we didn't get to enjoy the "fruit of our labor", we still learned something new. Maybe you did too. I'll be looking for a papaya again someday and maybe the next one will be different. If not the chickens will thank me.
Enjoy your day!

we had the same problem at preps...3 papayas...and they were horrible. We found out later that if they still taste like gasoline, they haven't finished ripening yet. We just thought they were rotting! Hope your next one tastes better!
Fun and informative. I've never tried to eat a fresh papaya. But this post did bring back memories - my Dad used to eat papaya tablets when we were growing up. Made me smile to think about that. ;)
I tasted them in Hawaii, thinking they'd surely be good there..... NOT! lol
Alison...thanks for the heads up...might just stick with the papaya tablets...yummy!
Thanks for all your comments lately. It's easy for me to post on my blog(takes a few minutes) when I am on my trip...harder to keep up with the comments. But thanks for all that you have left...I think my shoulder issue might just be what you mentioned...hate to think about that at 35. I have been taking a Dr. prescribed ibprofen...and it has felt better in the last two days then it has felt in 8 months. Go figure. Time will tell.
If I remember right, this echoes our one and only experience with buying fresh papaya.
Now that the "headless butcher" is done with the papaya, I hope she won't turn her attention to those beautiful chicken heads. Your chickens are so pretty.
