Our Family Trip 2015 : Needles Highway!

Our disappointment at not being able to see Jewel Cave quickly turned into anticipation as we headed east toward Custer State Park.  One of the things we wanted to see while we were in the Black Hills was The Needles Highway within Custer State Park.  We had planned to fit it a day later but decided this was the time!  So that's where we headed next...

This segment of Highway 87 reaches an elevation of 6402 feet.  The highway is named after the high granite "needles" in winds among...

Deemed "impossible" to construct by it's critics, Needles Highway was completed in 1922 and included 14 miles of sharp turns, low one-lane tunnels and impressive granite spires...

The road has mostly the traffic of seasonal sightseers like us...

We decided to pull off the road and climb around a little on the rocks.  It was a great little break along the drive...

Back in the pickup, we continued on our beautiful drive...

Near the end of the drive, we came across Sylvan Lake.  We stopped for a quick picture...

After we finished the Needles Highway, it was time to have supper and resume our evening plans that Kyla had made for us.  And what a fantastic evening it was!

Coming soon...
