This Little Piggy

These kids are often asking me to take them to see the baby pigs sometime. So over spring break last week, we spent some time over at Duane and Janettes pig farm getting acquainted with the pigs and with the whole amazing "farm to market" operation! It was a great spring break field trip!

First we checked out the meat shop. Here we are watching Duane grind meat that will go into pepper sticks. What an impressive grinder...
Then we headed up the hill to see the pigs. Thanks to farmer Duane for a personal guided tour...
In the shed with the big pigs...

Finally into the warm nursery. These little piggies were so cute. Both Kyla and Colter wanted to hold them right away but Maya was happy just to pet them...
Here is Kyla's looking for a little runt to bring home. Too bad Mom and Dad didn't agree with her plan...
Here is Colter holding a cute little guy. After a bit the pigs would start squealing. Colter quickly gave over this little guy to his Mommy again...
As we were about ready to leave, I felt a little tap on my arm and Maya whispered, "Can I hold one?" I love this picture of her... it almost made me want to take him home...
We headed back down to the meat shop to buy some pepper sticks for a snack and some old-fashioned franks for supper. You gotta love that locally grown, fresh from the farm to the market pork! Makes a person feel good to eat it!

It was also a little "teachable moment" for the kids. Those cute baby pigs will eventually end up on the dining room table ..."please pass the bacon".

Thanks Duane and Janette for taking the time to show us around!

Dear fieldtrip Mama,
This little piggy went to market... This little piggy stayed home...
this little piggy became your breakfast....

Our 2nd girl collected pigs from the time she was 4. Someone asked her why she liked them, and she said "because they are always smiling"! One time we got to go tour a pig farm, but she was NOT at all impressed with the real kind.
love,
Boxes of pigs still in my garage

that is so awesome, what a neat experience. Brought back memories for sure. I raised pigs in high school, it was a great money maker =) But you can plan on ruining any clothes you wear there, that smell just doesn't come out very good. Looks like the kids had a blast!

Brings back memories from our farrowing shed back home. Those piglet to table lessons are hardest when you've snuggled them, named them, touched those sweet little flat wet noses.
